The Weatherford Kangaroos football team celebrated its first victory of the season, a thrilling 34-28 double-overtime win over Mansfield Lake Ridge at Kangaroo Stadium Friday night, Oct. 25.
Weatherford is now 1-7 overall on the year and 1-3 in District 3-6A. Lake Ridge dropped to 1-7, 0-4.
The Roos had success running the ball, with two players rushing for over 100 yards, running back Xavier Craven (128 yards and a touchdown) and quarterback Brooks Kerbow (111 yards and two scores).
But it was a pass, not a run, that won the game for Weatherford.
Both teams scored on their possessions in the first overtime, but a fourth-down incomplete pass that sailed over a Lake Ridge receiver’s head in the end zone gave Weatherford the chance it needed to win the game in double OT.
On the very next play, Kerbow threw a 25-yard strike over the middle to a wide open Robert Taylor, and the game was over.
Weatherford forced overtime because its defense kept Lake Ridge out of the end zone on two fourth-quarter stands. The Eagles attempted field goals on both drives and missed both, including a 36-yarder late that would have won the game.
Micah Moore was a standout again on defense for the Roos, leading the team with 10 tackles.
The Kangaroos will be back at home Friday, Nov. 1 against Saginaw Boswell with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Pioneers are still looking for their first win at 0-8 overall and 0-4 in league play.
Boswell lost to North Crowley, No. 3 in the state in Class 6A, Friday night by a 67-0 score. Weatherford has won eight of the 10 meetings in the all-time series between the two teams, though the Pioneers claimed last season's contest 16-13 in Weatherford.
