Lady Roos sweep Arlington

Team finishes first round of district in third place

Posted

The Weatherford Lady Roos closed out the first round of district play with a straight-sets win at home against Arlington on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The Lady Roos beat the Lady Colts 3-0, but despite the scores looking solid on paper, on the court Weatherford had to battle more than they thought they would.

The first set was not the case. The Lady Roos jumped out to a 9-1 lead on the strength of four service aces and several big kills from Isabella Hale and Laine Tomlinson.

Weatherford took advantage of eight Arlington errors in the first set that led directly to points as the team just rolled to victory 25-11.

The Lady Colts woke up after that, and the Lady Roos intensity declined ever so slightly as Sets 2 and 3 turned out different than the one-sided Set 1.

The second set saw both teams exchange points more as Arlington cleaned up its serve-receive along with its errors.

With Weatherford leading 16-15, the Lady Roos won four straight points to build their biggest lead of the second set. Ava Broadie had two kills and Mayiah Polk had one during the run followed by a hitting error from the Lady Colts as Weatherford’s lead grew to 20-15.

From there the teams exchanged points. The Lady Roos got kills from Broadie, Tomlinson, Mia Hargis and Eloise Beauchamp, who also had a block. Weatherford won 25-20 to go up 2-0 heading into Set 3.

It proved to be even tougher than Set 2. The Lady Roos actually found themselves trailing for the first time as Arlington was playing cleaner for the first time, as Weatherford racked up eight errors that led directly to points. The Lady Colts led 20-16 and had the momentum.

The Lady Roos went on a run. Tomlinson got a kill that she followed up with an ace. Arlington had back-to-back hitting errors that tied the set at 20. Tomlinson followed with another ace followed by Broadie hitting a kill as Weatherford’s run extended to six points and a 22-20 lead.

Following a hitting error from the Lady Roos, Broadie hit another monster kill as Weatherford could sense the end of the match. Arlington crumpled as the next two points were scored due to hitting errors. Weatherford won the set 25-21, going on a 9-1 run to end it.

Broadie led the team with 16 kills while Tomlinson was second with nine kills. Natalie Griffin and Joy Versola handed out 17 and 13 assists to lead the offense.

Defensively Hargis had two blocks while libero Hayden Faught and Tomlinson each had 14 digs in the back row.

Despite the straight-sets win, Weatherford coach Courtney Hammett was not pleased with how her team played.

“We were too relaxed, too complacent,” Hammett said. “I told them after the game that it wasn’t good enough and they know that. Winning in three doesn’t reflect we didn’t play our game. The scores do. Always happy with a win, but not so happy at how long that win took when it shouldn’t have.”

Weatherford finished the first round of district play with a 5-2 record and is sitting solely in third place. The Lady Roos lost just one only one set during their five wins. The Lady Roos are scheduled to play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Arlington Sam Houston.

Lady Roos down Bowie

The Weatherford Lady Roos rebounded from a tough district loss earlier in the week to dominate Arlington Bowie on Friday, Sept. 25.

The Lady Roos won 3-0 in a match where little went wrong for them against the Lady Volunteers.

Weatherford dominated the first set, winning 25-9. The second and third sets were only a little bit more competitive as the Lady Roos won 25-14 and 25-12.

Ava Broadie led the team with 16 kills and four service, aces Lain Tomlinson was second with 11 kills. Natalie Griffin had a team high 19 assists followed by Joy Versola who had 16. Both had two aces. Defensively, libero Hayden Fought led the team with 13 digs.

Weatherford coach Courtney Summett had little to complain about.

“We took care of business,” Summett said. “That was a cleaner game and we executed the way I expect them to execute in a game like that.”
