The Weatherford Kangaroos look to end their regular season with a win against an Arlington team that needs to win to get into the playoffs.
The games kicks off at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the University of Texas and Arlington.
The Roos win last week against Arlington Bowie seemingly secured their spot in the playoffs no matter what, but a Weatherford loss and Arlington Lamar upsetting Aledo could present a three-team tie for the final two playoff spots.
The Colts are led by mobile quarterback Canon Cambron, who has secured the starting quarterback role the last three games after being used mostly as a runner. He leads the team in passing (877 yards, 11 touchdowns) and rushing (568 yards, 11 touchdowns).
“At the beginning of the year he looked more like a runner,” Weatherford coach Marshall Williams said. “He’s actually throwing the ball a lot better these days. He’s a guy who has a grasp of the offense now, and he’s the guy.”
Cambron’s best weapon is receiver Kason Brown, who leads the team with 31 catches for 481 yards and six touchdowns. He’s been fielding offers from several Division I schools.
“He might be, as far as accolades and offers go, the most highly recruited receiver in our district,” Williams said. “They put him in at wildcat too.”
Williams describes the Arlington defense as an aggressive one that he hopes Weatherford can take advantage of.
“They are pretty much a feast or famine football team,” Williams said. “They are going to be in 4-3, play loose-man and blitz. They are going to get theirs at times but we have to make them hurt. There is going to be a lot of man coverage, and our kids have to win their routes.”
Linebacker Luis Mendoza leads Arlington in both tackles and interceptions.
“He’s not the biggest kid in the world, but he’s also a kid who has proven to be more and more physical and he makes some plays as well,” Williams said.
Up front Timi Shoyombo leads the team with seven sacks, and safety Antonio Payne was highlighted by Williams for being the team’s best player in the secondary.
Weatherford is coming off a game where it struggled to run the ball as effective as it has in the past, while the team made some big plays in the passing game, it was not as efficient as the Roos would have wanted to be, Williams said.
Williams likes his team’s attitude in the first two days of practice and said he feels confident heading into the game.
“It’s nice to be able to go in during Week 10 and be in control of your own destiny,” Williams said. “If we win we get the third seed and get what we want. As far as the outlook of how the kids are, they have done a great job. They have been outstanding.”
