Wild has success in shortened meet

Captures 23 gold medals

Posted

The meet didn’t last as long as they wanted, but in an abbreviated competition at Fort Worth’s Ridglea Park Association recently the Weatherford Wild Swim Team came away with plenty of hardware.

Weatherford swimmers won 23 gold medals (15 males, 8 females), 20 silver (12 males, 8 females) and 18 bronze (10 females, 8 males). This included eight medals in relays (females 3 gold, 2 silver; males 2 gold, 1 silver).

The meet was stopped before all of the day’s scheduled events could be completed. The pool had to be made open to the public at 2 p.m.

“Yes, they were upset they did not get to finish. But the kids did well,” Wild coach Matt Williams said.

The meet also featured a different competitive distance than usual. Most Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Meets are in yards, but this one was in a metered pool.

“A lot of the kids actually beat their meter converted times, which I think is tough to do,” Williams said.

Individually, Blair Mezger (13-14 age group) led all female swimmers with two gold medals, while Bowen Judd (13-14) and Zach Edwards (18-24) led all males. Also winning gold among the females were Rebekah Berg (9-10), Ariella Fralick (9-10) and Madison Balaban (13-14), while Parker Berg (6-Under), Ridge Davis (8-Under), Samuel Balaban (11-12), Ryan Roberts (15-17), Blake Mezger (15-17), Blake Mezger (15-17) and Kade Burlison (18-24) also won a gold medal among the males.
