Voices of Parker County’s past come alive in America250 Talking Tombstone Tour

Posted

Local history will speak louder than ever this spring as the Parker County Heritage Society presents its annual Talking Tombstone Tour on May 2 — a special edition created in partnership with the Daughters of the American Revolution in honor of America’s 250th Anniversary.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at historic Old Greenwood Cemetery, visitors will stroll among the headstones and meet “silent citizens” who shaped the community’s earliest years. Local volunteers, costumed interpreters, and descendants will bring to life the stories of pioneers, veterans, civic leaders, and families whose legacies still echo through Parker County today.

This year’s theme, “Voices Through Time,” reflects the national spirit of remembrance as communities across the country prepare to commemorate the nation’s semiquincentennial. The DAR’s involvement adds a patriotic dimension to the event, highlighting the sacrifices and service of early Americans and the generations who followed.

“We wanted this year’s tour to feel like a gift to the community,” organizers said. “America’s 250th Anniversary gives us a rare opportunity to honor not only our national story, but the local men and women who lived it in their own remarkable ways.”

Visitors can expect a blend of heartfelt storytelling, historical insight, and theatrical flair. Each featured figure will share moments from their life — triumphs, hardships, humor, and hometown pride — offering a window into Weatherford’s past that is both educational and deeply personal.

Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for children age nine and under. Proceeds support the preservation efforts of the Parker County Heritage Society and help maintain the historic sites that define the community’s character.

Organizers encourage guests to wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and prepare for an unforgettable walk-through history. As America marks 250 years of independence, Parker County’s own stories stand ready to remind visitors that the nation’s legacy is built not only on famous names, but on the everyday lives of extraordinary people.
