Kangaroos linemen qualify for state

The Weatherford Kangaroos tied for first place in the Burleson Lineman Challenge competition on June 6. It qualified them for the State Lineman Challenge on Saturday, June 21 at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene.

The Weatherford junior varsity finished third in the competition.

 

GOLF

Stokes competes in Nelson Junior

Incoming senior Braden Stokes of the Aledo Bearcats competed in the Veritex Bank Byron Nelson Junior Championship June 3-5 at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas. The tournament features some of the top junior golfers in the country with multiple college scouts in attendance.

Stokes finished 20th out of the field of 85 golfers. He posted rounds of 70 and 70 the first two days to make the cut to the third day, where he shot 74 for a tournament total of 2 under par 214.

 

Ziegler wins again on NTPGA Junior Tour

Aledo’s Christian Ziegler posted another win on the North Texas PGA Junior Tour on June 11. He won the Boys 9-10 age group at the Grapevine Golf Course.

Ziegler shot a nine-hole total of 42 to win by four strokes.

 

Golf tryouts

Tryouts for the 2025-26  Aledo Bearcats and Ladycats golf teams will held July 31 at 10 a.m. at Squaw Creek Golf Course. Golfers are advised to bring:

  • A completed physical form.
  • Golf clubs and balls.
  • Wear a collared shirt, tucked in.
  • An understanding of basic rules.
  • Copy of report card.
  • Water bottle.
  • $20 green fee.

The tryouts will include:

  • Short game evaluation.
  • Full swing evaluation.
  • Play nine holes walking.
  • Discussing golf etiquette.
  • Discussing commitment to the team.

SOFTBALL

Pauls named new WHS coach after Lemons retires

Jessica Pauls has been hired as the new softball coach for the Weatherford Lady Roos. She replaces Jeff Lemons who recently retired after six seasons at the helm.

Lemons previously coached the Aledo Ladycats to back-to-back state championships in 2014-15. He was also an assistant coach when the Lady Roos won a state title in 2000 after finishing as runners-up in 1999.

Pauls was an assistant coach at Keller this past season. She helped the team to a 28-9-1 record, the District 4-6A championship and into the third round of the playoffs.
