Weatherford earns final playoff spot

The Weatherford Kangaroos were able to win their final regular season duel at Arlington on Tuesday, Sept. 29, to earn the district’s final playoff spot.

The Roos beat the Colts 12-7 as both teams came into the final match with a chance to make the playoffs.

Weatherford got off to a great start with its doubles matches. All three boys doubles teams and two girls doubles teams won their matches to put the Roos up 5-2 heading into the singles matches.

On the boys side, Brady Dearman won his match in three sets in the second position. Dylan Poston in third position and Omar Aguillera in sixth position both won their matches in straight sets.

The girls saw Addy Melven in the third position win her match in three sets. Anna Spencer, Liath Williamson and Amaya Maly in the fourth, fifth and sixth positions all won their matches to clinch the victory for the Weatherford team.

Weatherford coach Wesley Kidd was proud of his team’s accomplishment in a win-or-stay-home scenario.

“The kids played great,” Kidd said. “We battled some nerves for sure in a couple of matches.  Started out with a great showing in doubles sweeping the boys doubles and then getting two of the three girls doubles to set the tone.  Then we were able to hold on and get seven of the singles matches. Really big wins by Brady Dearman and Addie Melven in third-set breakers. Those two matches were really big for us to keep our momentum.”

The Roos are scheduled to play Southlake Carrol in the bi-district round at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5. The location was not confirmed as of press time, but talks were leaning towards Boswell.
