As the pages of the calendar began flipping closer and closer to Thanksgiving, Gomez could be excused for maybe sweating it out — Thanksgiving is not the favorite holiday for turkeys, after all.
When he was loaded for transport, one could imagine his relief when he discovered the destination was Annetta Town Hall.
It was there the town council gathered, and in the presence of witnesses Mayor Sandy Roberts pardoned Gomez.
“By the authority vested in me as Mayor of the Town of Annetta, Texas, I, Sandy Roberts, hereby issue this Official Pardon of Gomez, the Turkey, in recognition of the great service this noble bird has rendered to our community throughout the year,” read the first line of the proclamation.
Roberts recited the following words from the proclamation:
WHEREAS, the turkey has come to symbolize the abundance and gratitude that marks the spirit of our Town; and
WHEREAS, the turkey has contributed to the tradition of Thanksgiving, bringing families and neighbors in joyful celebration; and
WHEREAS, this particular turkey has shown exceptional character, courage and resilience in the face of all challenges, proving itself worthy of continued freedom; and
NOW THEREFORE, I, SANDY ROBERTS, MAYOR OF THE TOWN OF ANNETTA, do hereby grant Gomez a full and unconditional pardon from his appointed fate this year.
May Gomez roam freely in the fields, unfettered by the uncertainties of the holiday season, and enjoy his well-earned respite with dignity and peace.
Let this proclamation be known to all citizens of Annetta, as a testament to our commitment to kindness, compassion, and the joy of celebration.
