The Weatherford Lady Roos had another sweeping victory at home Tuesday, Sept. 15, against Arlington Lamar.

The Lady Roos won 3-0 and played one of their cleanest matches from start to finish of the season. Coach Courtney Hammett said she thought it was one of the better matches her team has played in terms of not giving away free points.

“We talk a lot about playing simple, clean, disciplined volleyball,” Hammett said. “They did that tonight. My setters did a good job of knowing when to mix it up and when to stay simple. My defense did a better job of communicating. I could hear them talking well tonight.”

In the first set, with the score tied at 6, Weatherford went on a run. Ava Broadie had two kills and an ace; Joy Versola had a service ace; Isabella Hale had a kill; and Eloise Beauchamp had a block to help the Lady Roos build a 13-7 lead.

From there Weatherford was in charge of the set and was able to build its lead. The Lady Vikings were in flux trying to play catchup and seemed to give more points away as the set went along. The Lady Roos did not get complacent, which led to a few hitting errors from their outside hitters, but also led to more kills and the lead increasing.

Laine Tomlinson and Broadie had several more kills while Beauchamp added two more blocks, and Weatherford rolled to a 25-16 win in Set 1.

Set 2 was even at 7 when the Lady Roos made their run again. Tomlinson and Broadie reeled off several kills each while Beauchamp added a kill and block. Weatherford went on a 10-3 run to go up 17-10.

From there the errors from Lamar started to add up which allowed the Lady Roos to swing even more freely. Broadie had several kills and an ace; Hale added a kill; Mia Hargis did as well before several Tomlinson kills finished off the set in style. Weatherford won the set 25-13 and had a commanding 2-0 lead.

The Lady Roos did not get complacent and went for the kill at the start of Set 3. Broadie had several kills and another ace, while Beauchamp had a block before Hargis had two kills. Libero Hayden Faught got an ace, and Tomlinson had a loud kill. Combined with the Lady Vikings mistakes, Weatherford built a 12-5 lead.

From there, Hammett started putting in subs to get them playing time. The play did not fall off as Brinlee Northcutt and Hargis got blocks at the net; Hale had three kills; Broadie racked up several kills, including a hard hit one from the back row; and Versola had an ace. The match ended with Northcutt getting a kill as the Lady Roos won the set 25-13 and the match 3-0.

Tomlinson led the team with 11 kills while Broadie was right behind her with 10 and Hale had eight kills. Versola dished out 19 assists while Natalie Griffin had 14 assists.

Defensively Beauchamp led the team with five blocks and Faught secured 13 digs. Broadie pounded three aces to lead the team.

Weatherford improves to 2-1 in district. The Lady Roos are next scheduled to play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Aledo.

Lady Roos earn first district win

The Weatherford Lady Roos swept visiting Sam Houston Friday, Sept. 11, to earn their first district win.

The Lady Roos won in straight sets 3-0 as they dominated the Lady Texans.

The first set started kind of sloppy. Both teams kept making hitting and serving errors as the score was tied at 9. After that the Lady Roos committed only one service error for the rest of the set which allowed them to get in a groove.

Joy Versola and Ava Broadie reeled off aces as Weatherford started to establish a lead at 14-11. Laine Tomlinson, Mia Hargis and Broadie started to put down kills and the Lady Roos were able to pull away, winning the first set 25-17.

The beginning of Set 2 saw the teams exchange kills in the first 17 points. Besides a few hitting errors, most points ended with a kill on either side. Broadie, Hargis and Tomlinson along with Maya Polk contributed kills as Weatherford led 9-8.

The Lady Roos feasted on two errors from Sam Houston along with Broadie scoring an ace and kill to go up 12-8. A service error and hitting error allowed the Lady Texans to close within two points trailing 12-10.

From there Weatherford ran away with the set. Tomlinson scored three kills and Hargis one block while Sam Houston kept giving points away on errors, and the Lady Roos lead was up to 18-10.

After the Lady Texans scored two points on a kill and a hitting error from Weatherford, the Lady Roos closed the match winning seven straight points. It included kills from Broadie, Tomlinson and Hargins, and an ace from Natalie Griffin while playing clean volleyball and allowing Sam Houston to make errors.

Weatherford won the set 25-12 to go up 2-0.

That kept going in Set 3 even with the Lady Roos cleaning their bench and playing all of their players. Broadie had four kills and two service aces before getting subbed out. Hargis had three kills and a block before she left the court as well. Brinlee Northcutt and Isabella Hale contributed kills.

Weatherford won the set 25-9 to get the sweep.

Tomlinson and Broadie led the team with nine kills each while Hargis was second with eight. Versola had a team high 19 assists. Broadie finished with six aces.

Weatherford coach Courtney Hammett did not have much to say since the game devolved into a lot of free points due to errors from Sam Houston.

“We didn’t get to play our game because of what was going on the other side of the net,” Hammett said.
