The Kangaroos won 4-1 against the Tigers, getting some measure of revenge for losing earlier in the week. Unfortunately, Weatherford needed to win that game as well to have a chance to make the playoffs.
With the Kangaroos’ fate already set, the team and players played with little stress as they tried to enjoy the last game several would ever play with each other.
Weatherford got on the board in the first inning. Logan Chaix hit a one-out triple and next batter Jett Vindiola got him home with a sacrifice fly ball. The Kangaroos led 1-0.
In the second inning the Tigers tied up the score. With a runner on second base, a fly out to center field was deep enough for the base runner to move to third base after tagging up. The ball was mishandled getting the ball back into the infield for an error which allowed the runner come home to make it 1-1.
Weatherford got back the lead in the next inning with a two-out rally. Zach Zanetti hit a single followed by a drawn walk from Nick Soto. Brooks Kerbow then came through with a triple that drove in both runs as the Kangaroos led 3-1. They would not relinquish the lead.
Next inning Weatherford added one more insurance run. Fabian Ortega hit a one-out double. Next batter Chaix hit a single that drove him in to make it 4-1.
From there pitcher Landon Carlisle and the defense shut down Mansfield to secure the win.
Kerbow led the team with two RBIs and a triple. Chaix and Vindiola each drove in one run each, with Chaix leading the team with three hits along with another triple. Overall, Weatherford finished with eight hits and drew four walks.
Carlisle on the mound pitched 6.1 innings and allowed one run, zero earned runs, on four hits while striking out 10 batters.
The win was a great feeling for a team and group of players playing their final game. The team team finished with a district record of 7-5, one game behind Mansfield Legacy. Despite not moving on to the playoffs there was a lot to be proud of this season.
The Kangaroos finished with a 20-12 overall record. They competed and showed they belonged with every team in their district. Weatherford even gave neighbor Aledo one of its rare losses in the first month of the season.
