Incumbents carry the day in local primary voting

Many GOP candidates will now have November opponents

Posted

Parker County incumbents fared well in Republican Primary voting, which culminated on Tuesday, March 3.

County Judge Pat Deen outpolled challenger Tim Galbreaith, receiving 15,036 votes (58.02%).

In the County Clerk race, incumbent Lila Deakle squeaked by challenger Dave Matthews, garnering 12,723 votes (51.33%) to Matthews’ 12,062 (48.67%).

Jacob Holt garnered 76.7% of the vote in the County Commissioner Pct. 2 race, and Pct. 4 Commissioner Mike Hale took 83.4% of the vote in that race.

In past election cycles all of the above would be essentially elected due to lack of Democrat opponents. This year, however, Deakle will be the only uncontested candidate.

In November, Deen will face Democrat Richard Simms in the County Judge race. Democrat Henry Lee Butler will challenge Holt for Pct. 2 Commissioner, and Rian R Brassell will be on the Democratic ticket opposite Hale for Pct. 4 Commissioner.

In the race for State Representative District 60, incumbent Mike Olcott outpolled challenger Amy Fennell, who dropped out of the race as a Republican both in the county and in the district. Olcott took about 84% of the vote district-wide, and will face Democrat Krissy Guess in November.

Statewide

Statewide, U.S. Senator John Cornyn and Ken Paxton had a close finish, with Cornyn receiving 41.89% of the vote to Paxton’s 40.68.

Wesley Hunt was the spoiler in that race, taking 13.5% of the vote. forcing Cornyn and Paxton. into a May runoff election.

Waiting in the wings will be Democrat James Talarico, who received 53% of the vote against Rep. Jasmine Crockett. This will be a race to watch in November, as Crockett and Talarico each gained more votes in the Democratic Primary than either Cornyn or Paxton in the Republican Primary.

In Parker County, Paxton outpolled Cornyn 46.8% to 36.7%. Talarico received 66.7% of Parker County Democrats’ votes.
