A fatal hit-and-run accident on South Main Street south of Interstate 20 in May 2024 yielded in a 15-year prison sentence for a 50-year-old Weatherford man whose vehicle struck and killed Weatherford resident Steven Boles.
William Cody Hernandez pled guilty on Jan. 6 to the 2nd degree felony offense of collision involving death. His punishment range for the crime was two to 20 years in prison.
The accident, which took place around 5 a.m. on May 24, 2024, was captured on video by a nearby Waffle House. The video shows Boles trying to cross South Main Street and being struck by a Toyota Corolla.
“This case was solved through some good detective work by the Weatherford Police Department as well as a key Crime Stoppers tip,” said District Attorney Jeff Swain. “When confronted by detectives about the accident two days afterwards, Mr. Hernandez immediately admitted what he did. He said he did not see Mr. Boles in the roadway and asked the detective to tell the family of the deceased that he was very sorry for what he did. He contended that he knew he hit something but wasn’t sure what it was until he heard that a person was hit and killed at that location.”
“When you hit someone, whether they are in a vehicle or are a pedestrian, among other things, Texas law requires that you stop and see if they need medical attention,” Swain said. “That’s also just the right thing to do.”
Boles was 62-years-old at the time of his death.
The case was heard before 43rd District Judge Craig Towson.
