The Weatherford Kangaroos were on the wrong side of a blowout district opener at Arlington Martin on Friday, Sept. 18.
The Warriors won 60-17, grabbing control in the first quarter and never letting go.
Martin came into the game favored after a 3-0 pre-district run and had explosive playmakers on both sides of the ball the Roos had not seen before.
Weatherford had probably the best start it could have imagined. The Warriors got the ball to start the game, and a big tackle-for-loss from the Roos’ Quentin Martinez forced Martin to punt the ball away.
A few plays into Weatherford’s first drive, quarterback Braelyn Jones found Jakob Hemphill open on a slant route. He broke a tackle and ran away for a 23-yard touchdown, putting Weatherford up 7-0 to start the game.
From there it all went downhill. Despite a steady stream of penalties taking back big explosive plays, the Warriors proceeded to score on their next four offensive drives in the first half.
Two scores came from four=star running back Javion Jones-Priest in the first quarter. The next two were a wide receiver screen from quarterback Chase Devoll to Kayden Howell and a fade route in the goal line to Chance Tealer.
After the first drive Weatherford's offense could not get a first down, but down 28-7, found some success. A holding penalty in the red zone meant the Roos had to settle for a field goal which Joseph Marino knocked through from 36 yards out to cut the lead to 28-10.
Weatherford could not keep the Warriors out of the end zone before halftime as Devoll kept it on a short quarterback sweep to put Martin up 36-10 at halftime.
The Roos started off the third quarter with running back D.J. Quimby breaking off a 75-yard run. It set up Jones for a five-yard touchdown run on the next play to cut the lead to 36-17.
Weatherford's defense got a stop on its next drive as Martin missed a 38-yard field goal and was hoping to parlay that stop into more good things. Unfortunately, the Roos reverse pass from Parker Clark was intercepted by the Warriors’ Daylan Howell, who returned it 28 yards for a touchdown to make the score 43-17.
Martin continued to pour it on, recovering an onside kick before scoring on a short run from Kayden Howell to increase the lead to 50-17 in the third quarter.
The Roos defense did get one stop later in the third quarter as Hunter Ferguson intercepted a pass deep in Weatherford's territory as the game moved to the final period.
The fourth quarter saw both teams start to insert their reserves with the result wrapped up. Martin added 10 more points on a 38-yard field goal and a nine-yard run by Jaydon McBride to make the final score 60-17.
The loss drops Weatherford to 2-2 and 0-1 in district play. Roos coach Marshall Williams said he hopes his young team can take the one-sided loss and use it in a positive way to play better in the rest of district.
"I hope we stay true to each other," Williams said. "We are a 2-2 football team. That is a really good football team, Coach (Chad) Rives has done a good job over there. We have to be better. I have to be better. The biggest thing is these kids have to stay true to each other. Sometimes this happens. We are going to be mad about it for 24 hours, gnaw at me for longer than that, and then turn the page and get ready for Sam Houston."
