Once again the area will be well-represented at the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics in track and field. In all, 27 athletes from Supersonic Track Club (18) and Mach I Track Club (nine) will be competing July 29-Aug. 8 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Leading all qualifiers for Supersonic is Sawyer Loe in the Boys 14-Under division. He advanced in five events with silver medals in the pentathlon, 800-meter run and 200 dash, along with running a leg of the first-place 4x800 relay (with Carlito Richards, Colsen Ing, and Rayce Blair), and the second-place 4x400 relay (with the same trio).

Jenna Fink topped all Mach I qualifiers, winning gold medals in three events in the Girls 11-Under division, the 1500 race walk, along with the 1500 and 3000 runs.

Her brother, Josh Fink, won the Boys 15-16 race walk and is seeking a fourth consecutive national championship in race walking.

In all, Supersonic won five gold medals, six silver, and three bronze as the top six in each event qualified for nationals. Mach I also captured five gold medals, with three silver and a bronze.

“I expected it. These athletes have been working hard since spring break, some since Saturday workouts in January and February,” Supersonic coach Richard Searcy said. “When I give them time off, they still come to practice. I knew they would do great.

“We are going to continue to work hard for the next four weeks and hopefully we get some All-American status.”

The top eight finishers at the Junior Olympics are named All-Americans.

“Everyone competed well. We also had a lot of personal-best times in this meet, and hopefully will continue to get those times down at the Junior Olympics,” Mach I coach Lupe Torres said.
