Aledo advances two dozen to regionals

Ladycats miss area title by single point

Posted

Once again a plethora of Aledo athletes will be competing at regionals following the Ladycats’ and Bearcats’ performances at the Area 5/6-5A Meet at Denton Braswell High School in Aubrey.

The Ladycats advanced 14, while 10 Bearcats will join them at the Region I Meet May 1-2 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. The top four finishers in each event at area qualified for regionals, from which the top two in each event, along with a wild card from across all four regions, will advance to state May 14-16 at the University of Texas in Austin.

As a team, the Ladycats scored 134 points at the area meet, finishing a single point behind Argyle. The Bearcats scored 75, behind Keller Fossil Ridge with 112 and Denton Ryan with 103.

“I thought the girls did a fantastic job. It was very windy, but these girls did not let it affect them,” Ladycats coach Mike Pinkerton said. “Our girls competed with all they had, and if they came up short, it was certainly not for lack of effort. I’m extremely proud of our girls and the way they competed.”

Individually, Molly Garrison and Holland Gladchuk each qualified in two events for the Ladycats. Garrison won the 1600-meter run with Gladchuk second, while the finishes were reversed in the 3200.

Garrison is seeking a return to state after finishing third in the 1600 and sixth in the 3200 last season.

Isaac Brooks won the 110 hurdles and was second in the 300 hurdles for the Bearcats, while Tyler Connelly finished second in both the 1600 and 320.

Also, the Ladycats (4x200 second, 4x400 first) and Bearcats (4x200 third, 4x400 fourth) each qualified two relays for regionals. Lincoln Tubbs, who ran a leg on both of those relays, is also looking to return to state as he was the lone returning underclassmen from last season’s 4x400 relay that placed fourth in Austin.

“Times are dropping at a really good time,” Bearcats coach Andy Clark said, adding about regionals, “Guys are getting faster and have two more weeks to get even faster.”
