The Weatherford Lady Roos were able to start off district last week with two big wins against Crowley and Mansfield Legacy.

The Lady Roos beat the Lady Eagles 16-4 on March 3 on the road before beating the Lady Broncos on a walk-off hit 5-4 at home on March 6.

The first game of district saw Weatherford easily take down Crowley with a barrage of hits and free bases. The Lady Roos scored in all seven innings and led 8-0 before the Lady Eagles got on the board in the third inning. Crowley scored just enough runs to avoid getting run-ruled and lasting all seven innings, with Weatherford’s four runs in the final inning making the final score 16-4.

Cassara Perdue and Londyn Martin each had a team high three RBIs. Perdue and Joey Fross each had a home run as well. As a team, the Lady Roos had 15 walks and 12 hits.

On the mound, Kendall Jones gave up three runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking three during four innings. McKenna Adkins pitched three innings and gave up one run on two hits, zero earned, while striking out eight batters and walking one. The defense committed two fielding errors.

The opening district home game against Mansfield Legacy was a different animal. The score was stuck at zero until the third inning when Jada Martin drove in the first run with an RBI triple.

The Lady Broncos tied the game at one in the fifth inning before taking the lead with three runs scored in the sixth inning to go up 4-1.

Weatherford got one run back in the sixth inning with a Katie Chappell RBI double, but the Lady Roos trailed 4-2 heading into the final inning.

A hit batter and a walk put two runners on base with one out. A wild pitch moved both into scoring position. Martin hit a ground ball for an out at first that scored one run to cut the lead to one.

Next batter Coleman hit a ground ball to third base that resulted in an error that allowed the next baserunner to score and tie the game up at 4-4 as well as Coleman to reach second base.

Perdue got to play the hero, hitting a triple into right field that drove in the winning run as her teammates and coaches mobbed her. Weatherford won 5-4.

Martin led the team with two RBIs . Perdue and Chappell both led the team with two hits and each drove in one run as well. The team finished with seven hits and three walks.

On the mound, Jones allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits while striking out seven and walking one during five innings. Adkins got the win by giving up no runs on two hits while striking out three and walking one during two innings.

Coach Jessica Pauls thought both games were great team wins in their own way and loved what she saw from her athletes.

“What I loved most was the culture and energy our girls brought to the field; it was phenomenal,” Pauls said. “You can really see how much they enjoy competing together and playing for each other. I also liked the way we battled and stayed locked in throughout both games.”

The Lady Roos are next scheduled to play at 2 p.m. on March 16 at Mansfield Lake Ridge High School and at 2 p.m. on March 17 at Boswell High School.
