The Bearcats also finished second to the Pirates by a single point.
“We had some really phenomenal swims and are moving many swimmers on to regionals,” Aledo coach Meghan Roberson said.
The top six swimmers in each event qualified to advance to the Region II Meet Feb. 6-7 at the Mansfield ISD Aquatic Center. From there, the top two finishers in each event, along with the next eight fastest swimmers from across all eight regions, qualify for state Feb. 20-21 at the University of Texas in Austin.
Gordy won four gold medals on the day. She took first individually in the girls 100- and 200-yard freestyle events, along with being part of the winning 200 and 400 free relays.
In the latter relay, the teams battled back and forth throughout the race before Aledo edged Granbury by .02 seconds.
Kale Roberson won three gold medals and a silver to lead the Aledo boys. He took first individually in the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle, and was part of the first-place 400 free relay and the runner-up 200 free relay (with Ian Perez, Parker Kaiser and Jaxon Robinson in both events) that set a school record of one minute, 31.13 seconds.
Roberson was also named the Male Swimmer of the Meet.
“It was a strong showing from both the boys and girls teams. We’re going to use what we learned at district to come in stronger at regionals,” coach Roberson said. “We had some incredibly hard fought races.”
The meet was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24, but was moved up two days because of the inclement weather that his North Texas this past weekend.
“Having the meet moved up for weather cut some of our prep timeline shorter, but will be beneficial in the long run giving us extra time to prep for regionals - as long as weather doesn’t keep us out of the pool for too long,” coach Roberson said. “In my five years of involvement in high school swimming, this is the third time Texas weather has impacted our championship season.”
Concerning regionals, she added, “We expect to face some of our hardest competition of the season at regionals. Paschal has a strong men’s team this year and is always fun to compete against. Many of our team also swim club together with them, so it’s a friendly but also highly competitive rivalry.
“We’ll see Granbury again, and also a strong swimmer from Colleyville Herritage, Aiden Tokarski (junior).”
Top six in each event advance to regionals
In the program’s first ever league meet, the Weatherford High School swim team qualified eight competitors for regionals from the District 3-6A in Grapevine this past week.
This is the first season for WHS to have a swim program.
Logan Crowe of the Kangaroos was named Swimmer of the Meet as he led the boys to a third-place team finish. He placed first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly. He also joined Zach Edwards, Brady D’Spain and Cullen Costello on the runner-up 200 free relay.
Bethany Crowe also won a gold medal in the 100 backstroke and was second in the 200 IM.
Also qualifying in other events for the Kangaroos were D’Spain in 100 breaststroke and 50 free; Costello in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke; Kade Burlison in the 100 free; and Jaxon Edwards in the 100 backstroke. Emma Kechnie also qualified for the Lady Roos in the 100 free.
The 6A Region I Meet is scheduled for Feb. 6-7 at the FMH Foundation Natatorium in Midland.
